The Ford Motor Company was founded by Henry Ford on June 16th, 1903 with its first factory situated in Detroit, Michigan. This was Ford’s second attempt at a car company as he had left the Henry Ford Company, which would go on to become Cadillac, in 1902. In the company’s earliest days it produced a handful of cars from parts supplied by other companies. Cars at the time were painstakingly assembled and therefore expensive. Ford wanted to make them available to the middle class which meant the costs of production had to come down. To this end, he developed the automotive assembly line and began manufacturing parts in-house.
